Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She took secondary school classes there while working two jobs. Her dream was to be an English high school teacher. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying, her dream to become a high school English teacher fell through. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces during poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating in writing You Got Me. In the Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained more experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
